LOVERN & FRIENDS
Initially, Lovern and Friends started as an informal day of golf among friends to honor Michael Lovern before undergoing his second surgery to remove a tumor from his spinal cord. Mike was first diagnosed with this tumor in 2002, and endured over a year of grueling rehab. Five years later, bad news was brought upon the Lovern family once again and Mike knew what was in store. The surgery was performed at MCV in October, shortly after the friendly golf match amongst his closest friends. Amazingly enough, he was swinging a golf club no more than 3 months later, an incredible recovery, thanks in part to a supportive group of friends, family, and an expert team of doctors from the MCV and the VCU Massey Cancer Center.
To commemorate his second successful recovery (as well as the recovery of other friends and family members), the event has evolved into an annual golf tournament. Our goal is to contribute to the ongoing research and care of all those affected by cancer. We anticipate growing the foundation annually, and have raised over $150,000 in 7 years - increasing our total donation each year to past benefactors Massey Cancer and LINC (Legal Information Network for Cancer). We are proud to announce our newest partner - the V Foundation!
